Common misunderstandings
These four mistakes are the most common among Amsterdam visitors – here are the clear answers before you book.
The GVB ticket does not cover the train to the airport.
Many people believe that the GVB ticket allows them to travel from Schiphol Airport to the city. This is not true. The NS train and the Airport Express bus 397 are not included in the GVB ticket. If you want to include the airport transfer, you need the Amsterdam Travel Ticket.
The Amsterdam Travel Ticket is not valid for Keukenhof.
The Amsterdam Travel Ticket is for the city plus the airport – not for the region. For Keukenhof, Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Haarlem, or Zandvoort, you need the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket. Only this ticket covers regional buses and regional trains.
You must pick up voucher tickets before your first ride.
The Amsterdam Travel Ticket and the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket are sold as vouchers. Before your first trip, you must exchange the voucher at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam Central Station, or another GVB ticket office for an OV-chipkaart. The GVB Ticket, on the other hand, is purely digital and can be used immediately.
Children's discounts are only available with the GVB Day Ticket.
A discounted child ticket for ages 4 to 11 officially only exists for the GVB Day Ticket for €5.00. For the Amsterdam Travel Ticket and the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket, there is no children's version according to GVB – children must purchase a separate 24-hour ticket there.
Here's what travelers are saying about our tickets
Over 50,000 verified reviews on GetYourGuide. Here's a small selection from recent months.
GVB Ticket
With the GVB ticket, you could move around easily and without complication.
GVB Ticket
Great that you can use so many trains, trams, and buses, and even the ferry. Only one train was very crowded, otherwise there was always plenty of space.
Amsterdam Travel Ticket
Exchanging the voucher for tickets worked smoothly, and we got from the airport to the city center quickly and without complications. Traveling by public transport in the city also works wonderfully.
Amsterdam Travel Ticket
Redeeming the voucher was really easy. You got a card and could then travel by tram, bus, or train. Gladly again.
Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket
Everything went perfectly. The exchange at Amsterdam Centraal main station was quick and easy to find – outside, to the left opposite the entrance. All in all, a smooth weekend.
Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket
When you come from Germany, the train service in the Netherlands is just awesome. Even the rail replacement service is super well organized. Truly top-notch.

Frequently Asked Questions
The most important answers regarding the three Amsterdam tickets. Click on a question to expand the answer.
Do I have to pick up my ticket before the first ride?
That depends on the ticket. The GVB ticket is completely digital and can be used directly in the GetYourGuide app after purchase – just hold the QR code up to the scanner in the tram, bus, or metro. The Amsterdam Travel Ticket and the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket, on the other hand, are sold as vouchers. You must exchange this voucher for a physical public transport chip card before your first journey, for example at the ticket machines at Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam Centraal.
What ticket do I need to travel from Schiphol Airport to the city?
For transfers between Schiphol and Amsterdam, you'll need the Amsterdam Travel Ticket or the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket. Both cover the NS train between the airport and all Amsterdam stations, as well as the Airport Express bus 397. A regular GVB ticket is not valid for the train or bus 397 – you can't get from the airport to the city with that.
Can I also go to Keukenhof with the ticket?
Yes, but only with the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket. During the Keukenhof season from March to May, the official Keukenhof shuttles from Arriva and Connexxion depart from Schiphol, Amsterdam Europaplein, Hoofddorp, and Haarlem. The GVB Ticket and the Amsterdam Travel Ticket do not cover these shuttles.
Is there a child ticket?
According to GVB, a single official discounted child ticket for ages 4 to 11 is only available for the GVB Day Ticket and costs €5.00 for 24 hours. There is no separate child version for the Amsterdam Travel Ticket and the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket. Children under 4 years old travel for free in Amsterdam.
When is my ticket valid from?
The GVB ticket is valid from the start time chosen at purchase and then expires after 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, or 168 hours, depending on the variant. The Amsterdam Travel Ticket and the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket, on the other hand, count calendar days from the first check-in and are valid until 4:00 AM on the day after the last day of validity.
Are night buses included in the ticket?
Yes. All GVB night buses (Niteliner) in Amsterdam are included in all three tickets. The Amsterdam Travel Ticket and the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket also cover the Connexxion night bus line N97 between Schiphol and the city center.
Can I cancel my ticket for free?
Yes. All three tickets can be canceled free of charge through GetYourGuide up to 24 hours before the chosen start time. In this case, you will receive a full refund of the purchase price, with no processing fee.
What is the difference between the Amsterdam Travel Ticket and the Region Ticket?
The Amsterdam Travel Ticket covers the city of Amsterdam and the connection to Schiphol Airport. The Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket goes far beyond that: it also applies to the entire region around Amsterdam – including NS regional trains, Connexxion and EBS buses, as well as the Keukenhof shuttles during the season. Anyone planning day trips to Keukenhof, Zaanse Schans, Volendam, or Haarlem absolutely needs the Region Ticket.
