What is included in the Amsterdam Travel Ticket?

The Amsterdam Travel Ticket combines two tickets in one: the train journey between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam, as well as the entire GVB public transport network in the city — with unlimited travel throughout the entire period of validity.

✈️

NS train Schiphol ↔ Amsterdam

Unlimited train rides between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Central Station with Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). Journey time approximately 15–20 minutes.

🚊

All GVB Trams

All tram lines in Amsterdam, including the touristically popular lines 2, 5, 13, and 17.

🚌

All GVB buses

City buses throughout Amsterdam — including night buses and neighborhoods beyond the tram lines.

🚇

All metro lines

Lines 50, 51, 52, 53, and 54 — often the fastest connection between the center, south, and north.

⛴️

GVB Ferries

Free ferries across the IJ to Amsterdam Noord — e.g., to NDSM, EYE Filmmuseum and A'DAM Tower.

♾️

Unlimited rides

Hop on as often as you like—no ride limits, no zone surcharges within Amsterdam.

What is NOT included?

The Amsterdam Travel Ticket covers the Schiphol ↔ Amsterdam route and all GVB public transport within the city. For travel to the wider region or to tourist attractions, you will need an additional ticket.

Intercity trains beyond Amsterdam or Schiphol

The ticket is valid exclusively between Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal. Further travel — for example, to Hoofddorp, Haarlem, Utrecht, or The Hague — is not covered.

Regional buses (Connexxion, EBS, Arriva)

Excursions to Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Marken, or Edam are not included in the ticket. The Amsterdam and Region Travel Ticket is the suitable choice for those.

Keukenhof Express & Shuttles

The Keukenhof Express (Line 852) and other private shuttle buses are sold separately.

Canal Tours & Water Taxis

Tourist canal boats, hop-on hop-off boats, and water taxis are not part of the GVB network.

💡 Do you also want to take excursions in the region? Then the following ticket is the better choice: Amsterdam and Region Travel Ticket.

Here's how it works

Three steps from purchase to your first ride. Important: The Amsterdam Travel Ticket is a voucher – you exchange it at a pick-up point for a smart card.

1

Book online

Choose the duration (1, 2, or 3 days) and book securely through GetYourGuide. You'll receive the voucher immediately by email.

2

Redeem voucher

Exchange the voucher for a physical chip card at one of the issue points (see below). At Schiphol Airport, this is possible immediately after landing.

3

Check-in & check-out

Hold the chip card to the scanner when boarding and alighting. This applies to trains, trams, buses, metros, and ferries — only then is the journey correctly completed.

💡 The validity begins with the first check-in and ends at 4:00 AM on the morning after the last valid day (depending on whether you have a 1-, 2-, or 3-day ticket). A day begins at midnight. You cannot select a start time when booking – the ticket only becomes active when you check in for the first time.

Is the Amsterdam Travel Ticket right for you?

In brief: when the Travel Ticket is worthwhile - and when another ticket is a better fit.

Ideal if you…

  • Arrive in Amsterdam by plane and want a seamless transfer from the airport to the city center
  • between 1 and 3 days in Amsterdam and you'll be traveling a lot by tram, bus, or metro
  • You want a round trip to the airport on one ticket, without having to buy separate train tickets.

  • you prefer a combination ticket that covers both NS trains and GVB public transport

Less suitable if you...

  • does not travel via Schiphol (e.g., by car or train from Germany)
  • stay longer than 3 days
  • Day trips to the region (Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Keukenhof)
  • If you want to continue on the NS train beyond Schiphol (e.g., to Hoofddorp, Haarlem, Utrecht)
  • primarily want to use hop-on hop-off boats or canal cruises

Frequently Asked Questions about the Amsterdam Travel Ticket

When does my travel ticket's validity begin and end?
Validity begins with your first check-in - not with voucher redemption or a selected time at booking. A start time cannot be set in advance. The ticket expires at 4:00 AM on the morning after the last valid day (depending on whether you have the 1-, 2-, or 3-day ticket). A day starts at midnight.
How does voucher redemption work at Schiphol Airport?
After landing, go to the Schiphol Airport Plaza and look for the gray-blue-red machine at the top of the escalator to platforms 1/2 or 5/6 — open 24/7. Alternatively, you can redeem your voucher directly at the NS Service & Ticket Shops. There, you will receive a physical chip card, which you can use to immediately board the train to Amsterdam.
How far is the ticket valid on the NS train?
The Amsterdam Travel Ticket is valid only on the route between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam. Journeys beyond Schiphol, such as to Hoofddorp, Haarlem, Utrecht, or The Hague, are not covered. You will need a separate NS ticket for these routes.
What if the machine at the airport doesn't work?
Some travelers report that the ticket machines at Schiphol occasionally malfunction. In that case, you can redeem the voucher directly at the NS Service & Ticket Shops at the airport – they are staffed 24/7 and have trained employees.
Does the ticket also apply to GVB trams, buses, and metros?
Yes. With the chip card, you can use all GVB trams, buses, metros, and ferries in Amsterdam without limitation, just like with a regular GVB ticket. Don't forget to check in and check out when boarding and alighting.
Can I cancel the ticket for free?
Yes.
Are there discounts for children?
There are generally no children's tickets for the Amsterdam Travel Ticket, neither from GetYourGuide nor anywhere else. Children under 4 travel for free when accompanied by an adult. For older children, a regular ticket directly from GVB or NS is recommended.
Is the Keukenhof Express included in the Travel Ticket?
No. The Keukenhof Express (Line 852) is a separate shuttle bus and is not operated by GVB. You need a separate ticket for it. For trips in the region — including Keukenhof — the Amsterdam and Region Travel Ticket is the better choice.
